Electives:
Teenagers and technology
One of the concerning facts about technology today is that it can provide access to pornography. It's available in our homes day and night. It's free and our children know how to use the technology better than we do. Be informed of the dangers that teenagers can easily be exposed to, look at what the Bible has to say about these things and discuss what we can do as Christian parents to guide our children to make wise and godly choices with respect to technology.
Amit Khaira is the chaplain of a Perth school and has a keen interest in teenagers, what technology exposes them to and how the gospel equips young people for life.
Teenagers and family
This workshop will describe and explore the major characteristics of adolescent thinking and behaviour and consider their impact on relationships in the family. We will explore ways to encourage and value these as new strengths, particularly from a biblical framework. We will discuss what comes within the range of normal adolescent behaviour and what might be indicators of something more serious. We will consider some of the demands on everyone in the family, what best contributes to the adolescent's mental health and well being and how best the Christian parent can respond.
Geoff and Cynthia Dixon work in the area of mental health. They have raised four teenagers and so have both family and professional knowledge and experience to lead us in this elective.
Teenagers and church
Christians have two families – our nuclear family and our church family – and we are desperate for them to get along together. But how does that work with teenagers? Looking at a combination of the Bible's challenges and encouragements to parents, this elective will examine how we speak to them about God, and to God about them. Our aim will be to see how we can best serve both the church and our teenagers for God's glory.
Ed Surrey is a youth worker at a Perth church which has a large youth group comprising pre, early, mid and late teenagers – the whole range!
